Bacterial infections kill more than 9000 Australians each year and cost the Australian economy more than $1 billion each year in direct health care expenditure. If we do nothing, multidrug resistant bacteria, or superbugs, will decimate our healthcare system.
By 2030, more than 16,000 people will die each year — that’s more than 300 each week. Frustratingly, many of the deaths from infection are preventable.
It is time to stop talking about the problem and start enacting solutions. IMB’s Centre for Superbug Solutions (CSS) will follow a ‘one health’ approach to implement targeted solutions for both human and animal health, addressing the scourge of infections in our community.
